Leave It To Beaver

Fiddler and vocalist Julie Beaver of Julie & the BadDogs is ready to enter the marketing fray with three new products hitting retailers simultaneously.

"Right now is a very prolific time for me as an artist," said Beaver. "In the span of one week, I'll have two albums and a live DVD released all at once. I hadn't planned on the timing, but I must say, it's quite a rush! It's also about time."

In addition to her own band the BadDogs (and duet work with Grammy winner Louie Ortega), Beaver also tours nationally and internationally with contemporary folk artist Darryl Purpose. One CD and the DVD are in collaboration with Purpose, who in the liner notes writes, "Sometime last winter I thought it would be a fun thing to have a tangible souvenir of these shows Julie and I have been doing in recent years, So I called up Julie, booked a night at the Coalesce Bookstore, asked Rick Sutton to bring his remote recording gear, and invited a few friends and fans to play audience. A few days before the show a friend suggested that we set up a video camera for the people who have never been able to see us perform, I called Julie's dad, Paul, knowing that the video he already shot of his daughter would fill a small library. I asked him if he could bring his camera. He brought five. What you hold in your hands, be it CD or DVD, is most of what happened that night."

"That project took a long time to incubate, but we are happy to announce that it is finally ready to hatch out of its shell," said Beaver, who will appear with Purpose this Sunday, Dec. 18 between 2 and 4 p.m. for a CD and DVD Release Party at Coalesce Bookstore and Garden Wedding Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. "It's not a concert," said Beaver. "We'll watch portions of the DVD and have drinks, snacks, sign CDs, and so forth.

"Touring with Darryl is great, as we're really close friends who make meaningful music together. This february we are taking Live At Coalesce to the Austin Folk Alliance conference to meet with prospective booking agents. Darryl is looking to go first class with this project and wants to make his next tour a much higher level than what he's done in the past," explained Beaver. "As for my project with the BadDogs band, Don't Wait Too Long was released December 9. We're not planning a formal party, as of yet. It will be available at our gigs, which are posted on my web site at juliebeavermusic.com."

The album not only demonstrates Beaver's exceptional fiddle work, it also showcases her arresting voice and ability to interpret songs such as John Fogerty's "Bad Bad Boy" and Louie Ortega's bluesy "I'm Nobody's Business". She's pretty easy on the eyes, too.

''Don't Wait Too Long' is the title of the last track on the album, but it's not one of my favorite songs on the CD," added Beaver. "I decided to name the album Don't Wait Too Long because it fits exactly with what the project is: I've been waiting too long to do my own album. Something has been holding me back -- I've always had an excuse (I don't have the money, I'm not good enough, I should wait until I define my style, I don't know what songs I want to do, etc.). The point is, I got tired of waiting. You can't sit around and wait while life passes you by. You have to be fearless and jump right on in, throw yourself out there and stop worrying about what other people are going to think about you. As long as you keep waiting to be perfect you'll never get anywhere. Is this album perfect? Heck no. Am I damn proud of it? You betcha. To hold it in my hands will be a dream come true."

Both Don't Wait Too Long and Live At Coalesce will also be available at the Cambria Book Company, Coalesce Bookstore in Morro Bay, Blue Note Music in San Luis Obispo, and Divine Appointment Guitars in Paso Robles.
